At dawn of 24 February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Russian military vehicles crossed the Ukrainian border in several places, including Belarus.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy says 137 people have been killed so far, including civilians.The UN’s refugee agency says about 100,000 Ukrainians have been displaced, with thousands fleeing to nearby European states.

Why Did Russia Invade Ukraine?

It is important to know the cause of conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

If not managed wisely, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could lead to World War III.

Ukraine and Russia are separated by a common border. Ukraine has a long history with Russia.

Russia has a population of almost 144 million people, compared to 44 million in Ukraine.

Russia has the world’s greatest land area, with 17.13 million square kilometers. In comparison, Ukraine has 603,548 kilometers.

Russia opposes the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which includes the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Japan, to mention a few. Because Russia and China are not members of NATO, they are allies.

Ukraine, which shares a border with Russia, agreed not to join NATO upon gaining independence from Russia , because joining NATO would mean the NATO military, which is made up of NATO member countries, would have a base in Ukraine, which is near to Russia.

Now that Ukraine is attempting to break the pact by joining NATO, Russia has decided to reconsider the accord. Russia now wants to take control of the region that borders them and Ukraine so that NATO forces, which are primarily made up of US military personnel, will not be able to spy on Russia.

Since Ukraine’s president insists on joining NATO, Russia has ordered Ukraine’s soldiers to return home while Russia’s military takes control of the border region.

China is backing Russia, and don’t forget that the two countries are partners. China has the world’s greatest population, whereas Russia has the world’s largest land area.

Russia is not afraid of NATO because they understand that if external powers such as the United States, France, Germany, and other NATO allies strike Russia’s military in support of Ukraine, the world will descend into chaos.

Russia claims they are battle-ready and has the military might to confront any country or countries. Russia has North Korea and Iran on its side in addition to China.

The worst that NATO can do is impose sanctions on Russia, which it is currently doing. Any country that aids Ukraine militarily or attempts to invade Russia will undoubtedly spark World War 3.
