How Interpol arrested Nnamdi Kanu while seeking countries’ support for Biafra

Nnamdi Kanu was apprehended by the International Criminal Police while seeking foreign support for the actualisation of the Republic of Biafra.

NnamdiKanu, who holds Nigerian and British passports, was arrested by security operatives outside his London base on Sunday.

He had been declared wanted by the Federal Government since 2017 after he jumped bail following the invasion of his country home in Abia State by soldiers.

A source disclosed that Kanu was arrested while leaving Israel for an unknown country but this could not be independently verified on Tuesday.

The source stated, “The request for the arrest of Kanu was made to the INTERPOL headquarters in Lyon, France, about two months ago. Kanu could not be arrested at his London base because he is a British citizen and repatriating him to Nigeria may be challenging and the process cumbersome.

“So, the security agencies waited patiently for him to leave the British soil before moving against him; he was arrested while on transit. There was evidence of his meetings with foreign governments to solicit support for Biafra.”

The source also referenced the suspension of Twitter by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), who justified his action by stating that Kanu used his Twitter account with 300,000 followers “to instruct his loyalists to kill Nigerian soldiers and police officers”.

Another source corroborated that Kanu was nabbed while on transit but said he could not confirm the exact location.

“The Nigerian government used conventional diplomatic means to facilitate the arrest of Kanu through the INTERPOL. There are also suggestions that our intelligence agencies played a role in the arrest and extradition process. It was confirmed that Kanu was picked up while on transit but the location cannot be immediately confirmed,” the source volunteered.

As part of strategies to arrest the separatist group leader, the President was said to have met with the French President, Emmanuel Macron, in May during a summit on the financing of African post-COVID economies convened by the French government, where he sought Macron and INTERPOL’s support for the arrest of Kanu.

Nnamdi Kanu’s surety, Abaribe sets to claim N100M forfeited bail fund from FG

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the principal surety to the embattled self-acclaimed Biafran leader, Nnamdi Kanu may on July 26 apply for refund of his N100M forfeited to the federal government when Kanu jumped bail.

Kanu, who jumped bail since 2019, has just been rearrested and will appear in Federal High Court for continuation of his criminal trial on terrorism charges.

The senator representing Abia North Senatatorial district in the Senate had forfeited the huge sum in liue of his inability to produce Kanu in court to face the criminal trial.

Abaribe was said to have been given opportunities five times to produce Kanu as required by law but could not meet up.

In one of his appearances in court, the Senator has alleged that that the federal government caused Kanu to jump bail and escaped out of the country when armed soldiers allegedly invaded his family house.

He prayed the court to hold the federal government responsible for the escape and spare him the pain of forfeiting the bail bonds

Justice Binta Nyako, however, rejected the prayers of the surety and ordered him to either forfeit the bail bonds or stand in place of Kanu for criminal trial on terrorism and reasonable felony punishable with either death or life imprisonment.

The Senate minority leader was said to have subsequently opted for lesser punishment and thereafter forfeited the huge sum.

Although DAILY POST could not reach Abaribe for comments, one of his lawyers, Maxwell Okpara, said that the legal team of Abaribe will apply for refund of the money for their client.

“It is a settled law that once escapee defendant in a criminal matter is rearrested, the surety who forfeited bond must be refunded.

“It does not matter whether the escapee accused person is rearrested by the surety or somebody else as in the instant matter. The bottom line is that our client must be refunded to the tune of N100M he had earlier forfeited in the course of the suretyship,” the lawyer said.

BIAFRA: Asari Dokubo Linked To Nnamdi Kanu’s Rearrest By Buhari Govt – Reno Omokri

 

Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has suggested a Nigerian who may have been responsible for the rearrest of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Omokri suggested that Asari Dokubo, an ex-Niger Delta Militant may be the link to Kanu’s rearrest by the Nigerian government.

The former presidential aide recalled how Dokubo threatened to bring Kanu down, a few weeks ago.

In a tweet, Omokri wrote: “Exactly 2 weeks ago, Nnamdi Kanu quarrelled with Asari Dokubo and Asari promised to deal with him. He even swore on the Quran.

“Asari’s exact words on June 14 were “I will surely bring you down.”

“And now this. Is it a coincidence?

“Don’t make unnecessary enemies.”

Dokubo has been against the IPOB leader following a fallout between them.

The fallout between the former Niger Delta warlord and Kanu was due to ideological differences on the agitation for Biafra.

Following their fallout, Dokubo had created the Biafra Customary Government (BCG).

Dokubo had vowed to destroy Kanu, while describing him as a thief using the agitation for Biafra as a business.

“Nnamdi Kanu, I’m not in your category but for this, I will surely bring you down. I will destroy this evil empire that is working as a hindrance to the restoration of Biafra,” Dokubo had threatened.

Lagos State Government Arrests Popcorn Seller For Attacking Officials With Knife, Charms

 

Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has arrested a popcorn seller for allegedly attacking its officials on Tuesday.

The LAGESC Corps Marshal, Gbemisola Akinpelu, a retired Commissioner of police, condemned the incident.

A statement by Kehinde Adebayo, Head of Public Affairs, said the suspect, 30, was apprehended around Railway Crossing, Fagba, in Ifako-Ijaye Local Council Development Area.

He was hawking popcorn and brought out a knife and charms to attack the operatives.

Akinpelu said the trader was eventually subdued and moved to the agency’s headquarters for questioning.

“The suspect has been handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution to serve as deterrent to others,”

He said.

The LAGESC chief decried the incessant attacks on the personnel effecting the ban of illegal street trading.

She regretted the serious injuries inflicted on some of them, and recalled how one died after an assault.

Akinpelu reiterated the agency’s commitment to rid Lagos of all environmental nuisances.

Ebonyi Government Announces N5m Tuition As Medical Varsity Begins September

 

Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi has announced that academic activities would take off in September 2021 at the new state-owned Medical University, Uburu, in the Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state.

He stated this during the flag-off of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund and State Health Insurance Scheme in Abakaliki on Tuesday.

He pointed out that the university remained the best in the country.

Umahi also revealed the amount of tuition students of the institution will be paying.

He said, “medical students will be paying N5m, while non-medical students, would be paying between N2m and N3m for tuition and other fees in the university.

He said,

“Our resolve is to work tirelessly with all relevant stakeholders in Ebonyi State and at the federal level to ensure well-equipped and functional health centre in each of the 171 wards in the state.

“We aim to ensure that all civil servants in the state take cover under the Ebonyi State Health Insurance Scheme. On behalf of the wonderful citizens of Ebonyi State, I want to thank our donors, parties, development partners, representatives of the National Health Insurance Scheme and all those who have found it important to make this happen.

British Government Reacts To Alleged Involvement In Nnamdi Kanu’s Arrest

 

The British High Commission has cleared air on the insinuations that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu was arrested in the United Kingdom.

Dean Hurlock, a spokesperson of the British High Commission, on Tuesday said the Kanu was neither arrested nor extradited from the UK.

“We can confirm that Nnamdi Kanu was not arrested in the UK for extradition purposes,”

TheCable quoted him.

Recall that the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami had disclosed on Tuesday that Kanu was arrested on Sunday.

According to him, Kanu was arrested through the collaborative efforts of Nigerian intelligence and security services.

Kanu who is a dual citizen of both Nigeria and Britain was rumoured to have been arrested in the UK where he was believed to have been staying since his escape from the country in 2017.

There are claims that he was arrested in one of the African countries.

Student Who Raped 2 LASU Virgin Girls Sentenced To 21 Years Imprisonment

 

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Tuesday sentenced a student of Lagos State University (LASU), Afeez Ogunbowale, to 21 years imprisonment for involvement in armed robbery and rape of two fellow LASU students.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo sentenced Ogunbowale after finding him guilty of five counts bordering on conspiracy, rape and armed robbery.

Taiwo said that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

She held that the testimony of the victims was compelling, adding that they were able to positively identify Ogunbowale as one of the culprits.

“The defendant is hereby sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for conspiracy, 21 years’ imprisonment each for counts of armed robbery and 21 years’ imprisonment each for counts of rape.

“The sentences are to run concurrently,” she said.

On hearing the sentence, Ogunbowale who has been suspended by LASU over the case wept profusely at the dock.

NAN reports that the prosecution team led by Mrs O.A Bajulaiye-Bishi had said that the defendant committed the offences alongside others who are at large, on April 18, 2018, at the Okokomaiko area of Lagos.

“The defendant and his accomplices, while armed with a gun, knife, machete and bottle, robbed the two students in their off-campus accommodation.

“They were robbed of their phones, power bank, earpiece, gold chain and N1, 200.

“The defendant and one of his accomplices who is still at large had unlawful sexual intercourse with the complainants.

“The offences contravene Sections 260(1) and 297(2)(a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015,” she said.

NAN reports that in their testimonies on Nov. 4, 2019, the two students, told the court that they lost their virginities to the attack.

The witnesses said they were robbed by five men but raped by two members of the gang – Ogunbowale and another – who is at large.

Toyota, a Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer, has snubbed Nigeria, as it opened an assembly plant in Ghana.

The plant, which was established to assembly Toyota Hilux pick-up and other sedans by the Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing Company Limited, is located in the Freezones Enclave in Tema.

He Must Not Die In Custody – Fani-Kayode Warns Buhari About Nnamdi Kanu

 

Femi Fani-Kayode, former Aviation Minister has issued a note of caution to the Nigerian government over the rearrest of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Fani-Kayode known to be a close ally of Kanu said the IPOB leader must not die in custody.

In a tweet, the former minister urged the Federal Government to ensure that Kanu is treated with decency and respect while in custody.

“It is no longer news that @MaziNnamdiKanu has been arrested and detained. I advise the FG to ensure that he does not die in custody and that he is treated with decency, decorum and respect,”

He tweeted.

The Nigerian government had arrested Kanu and repatriated him to Nigeria to continue his trial.

Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, disclosed that Kanu was arrested on Sunday.

Malami had said the IPOB leader was re-arrested through a combined operation of Nigerian and foreign security agents.

Following his repatriation, he was rearraigned before Justice Binta Nyako-led Federal High Court who ordered his remand in custody of the Department of State Services, DSS.

Court Reinstate Justice Oloyede As Osun State High Court Justice

 

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has on Tuesday reinstated Justice Olamide Folahanmi Oloyede of the Osun State High Court.

JLOADED recalls that Justice Oloyede was unjustly retired by the National Judicial Council (NJC) in 2016.

Her retirement came when she was petitioned by the Osun Civil Societies Coalition for her failure to conduct herself in a manner preserving the dignity of her office, impartiality and independence of the Judiciary.

The NJC, in suspending Justice Oloyede, stated that it found that she had conducted herself in a manner inimical to the dignity of her office as well as impartiality and independence of the judiciary when she sent a petition against then Governor of the state, Rauf Aregbesola, and his deputy to the State House of Assembly.

She had also circulated the petition to 36 persons and organizations.

Katsina Has Second Highest Number Of Out-Of-School Children – Minister

 

Minister of state for education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba has revealed that Katsina has the second highest number of out-of-school children in Nigeria.

He revealed this on Monday in Katsina during the inauguration of the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA), a World Bank-assisted project.

The minster stated that poor standards of education could affect the country’s ability to compete in the 21st century global economy.

Nwajiuba, however, noted that the World Bank project will improve literacy and the boost the standards of education in the state.

“Education is critical for national development as it is the only way we can produce adequate manpower to run the country,” he said.

“For any country to develop, it must have a well-equipped education system that prepares its people with adequate knowledge to enable them take competitive advantage in the 21st century world economy.

“It is in light of this that we are here to launch BESDA in Katsina state. It is a programme that will ensure better life for all our children, and the cardinal objective is to increase equitable access, improve literacy and strengthen accountability for results at the basic education level.

“The 17 states that are the focus of this are drawn from seven in the north-west, six in the north-east and one each from each of the other geo-political zones.

“Katsina state is the second highest in ranking of out-of-school children in Nigeria and this is worrisome to all of us. There is much to fear if a single child is out of school not to talk about the millions of children that we are talking about in Nigeria.”

The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, has said that Nigeria is still the best country in the world despite numerous challenges confronting its people.

She charged Nigerian youths to desist from condemning the country, adding that other nations cannot afford to accommodate 240 million Nigerians.

“Whilst I agree that the potential of this country has not been fully met by successive governments, but I disagree with the view that there is no hope; I disagree with total division of Nigeria. Nigeria is a great country and the best on earth.

“Young people must get involved. There is no reason to throw stones at any institution of government unless you are willing to get into that government and do something about it. It might take you a lifetime, but it does require people to make the sacrifice. If enough of us are pushing in the right direction, there will be a big difference,” Ms Mohammed added.

President Buhari Seeks Approval For ₦894 Billion Supplementary Budget

 

Nigeria’s preseidnet, President Muhammadu Buhari has written the House of Representatives to seek approval of N894.842bn supplementary budget to fund the purchase of COVID-19 drugs and weapons for the Armed Forces.

In a letter addressed to Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila read at Tuesday plenary, the President said the supplementary budget is limited to some critical needs, stressing other needs will be contained in the 2022 budget.

The President indicated the 2022 Appropriation Bill will be presented to the National Assembly in September.

The President said COVID-19 drugs will be procured from the supplementary budget as the Federal Government intends to vaccinate about 70 per cent of eligible Nigerians before the end of 2022.

Federal Government Announces Extension Of NIN-SIM Verification Deadline

 

The Federal Government has announced the extension of the deadline for NIN-SIM data verification.

The Director, Public Affairs Nigerian Communications Commission, Ikechukwu Adinde disclosed this in a statement on Monday, stating that the verification would continue till July 26, 2021.

According to the statement, the decision to further extend the deadline was made based on a request by stakeholders.

“The Federal Government has approved the extension of the deadline for NIN-SIM data verification to the 26th of July, 2021.

“The decision to extend the deadline was made after a request by stakeholders in need to continue the NIN-SIM verification process following the rapid increase in the number of enrolment systems across the country.

“The Federal Government has approved the extension as part of its efforts to make it easier for its citizens and residents to obtain the NIN and it is important to take advantage of the extension.

“With the great number of enrolment centres across the country, every citizen and legal resident should be able to obtain their NIN,”

The statement said.

The statement also quoted the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami, as thanking Nigerians for their patience and compliance with the Federal Government’s directive on the NIN-SIM registration exercise.

Buhari Spoke As Warlord, Anticipating War – Niger Delta Activist, Briggs

 

Annkio Briggs, popular Niger Delta activist, has said President Muhammadu Buhari was anticipating the break out of a war in Nigeria.

Briggs made the remark in response to Buhari’s comment that the members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, are a dot in a circle with nowhere to run to.

Buhari had made the controversial comment during an interview with Arise Tv, a few weeks ago.

The comment was widely believed that Buhari was referring to the Igbos not just IPOB members.

However, Briggs said Buhari spoke as a military general and a warlord.

Featuring on AIT, Briggs said:

“Well, unfortunately, or maybe historically as someone who witnessed the war and I’m a victim and some of my family members were victims of the civil war. I recall the civil war, I understand the civil war, I know what led to the civil war.

“The President in that interview was speaking as a warlord. He was speaking as a general at war with a country.

“That was the way he spoke. He referred to the Igbo people because I don’t know how many people from my community or state, who have businesses in Kano, Kaduna or Lagos. He was referring specifically to the Igbo people and reminding them that they have a lot of property and investments outside the area he has described as dot.

“The whole of Igbo nation is not Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). IPOB is a movement headed by a group of people. IPOB is not an identity of nationality. The President made a claim which made me to react.

“What is this time? It means he is anticipating a war. He said this time there will be no access to the ocean. What does he mean?”
