EndSARS: No Evidence That Soldiers Killed Anyone At Lekki Toll Gate – US

 

On October 20, members of the security forces enforced curfew by firing shots into the air to disperse protesters, who had gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos to protest abusive practices by the Nigerian Police Force’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Accurate information on fatalities resulting from the shooting was not available at year’s end.

Amnesty International reported 10 persons died during the event, but the government disputed Amnesty’s report, and no other organization was able to verify the claim.

The government reported two deaths connected to the event. One body from the toll gate showed signs of blunt force trauma.

A second body from another location in Lagos State had bullet wounds. The government acknowledged that soldiers armed with live ammunition were present at the Lekki Toll Gate.

At year’s end the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution continued to hear testimony and investigate the shooting at Lekki Toll Gate.

Amid overwhelming reports and claims by various bodies and media organisations, including Amnesty International and the U.S.-based Cable News Network, the United States government says it does not believe soldiers shot at protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate.

The U.S. view is contained in its newly-released ‘2020 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: Nigeria.’

It said:

Robbers Attack A Bank In Delta Killed Three Persons

 

Some armed robbers had reportedly killed three persons when they attacked a bank in Issele-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area in Delta State.

An eyewitness asserted that the robbers stationed some of their gang members at vital positions in the town while some robbed the bank without confrontation.

It was gathered that some of the customers were held hostage for almost an hour while other gang members stationed outside shot sporadically.

“Unfortunately, four persons died in the operation while many were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals,” an eyewitness revealed.

The acting Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident.

Edafe stated that he was in contact with the division for rapid response on the details of the incident.

He said,

“I am yet to get the details of the operation, but I learnt that three persons were killed during the operation. I will get back to you.”

Teaching Will Not Be A Thankless Job In Lagos – Sanwo-Olu

 

It was a defining moment for teachers in the Lagos State Education family on Tuesday. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented handsome rewards to teachers adjudged to have made quality impacts in the State’s teaching service.

Thirteen teachers and school administrators got a brand new car each from the Governor at the Year 2020 Teachers’ Merit Award organised by the Ministry of Education. The awardees were part of the finalists nominated for the grand prize by the Screening Committee led by the chairperson of Association of Private Educators in Nigeria, Mrs. Lai Koiki.

The merit award is an initiative of the Sanwo-Olu administration to reward teachers’ commitment and excellent service to boost delivery of quality education in the State.

Over 3,700 applications were reviewed by the screening committee; 23 teachers and school administrators made it to the final stage. They were adjudged to be passionate, visionary, and adept in modern teaching techniques.

Sanwo-Olu, while presenting the cars to the recipients, said his Government was cognizant of the essential role of teachers in building a prosperous society, stressing that the reward would be made regular to inspire hard work and excellence.

The Governor said the merit award was institutionalised in fulfillment of his pledge to raise the bar of excellence in education and make teaching service a rewarding profession.

He said:

“Today, I celebrate the remarkable teachers who leave no stone unturned in molding lives, building character and preparing our students for a productive future. In Lagos State, teaching is not a thankless job and this annual Teachers’ Merit Award is a proof that Lagos will always reward excellent, committed, and diligent teachers.

“We are cognizant of the essential role that teachers play in building a formidable society, which is why we are committed to rewarding exceptional teachers on a regular basis. This is one of the key strategies for the actualisation of the Education and Technology Pillar of our development agenda. We cannot thank our teachers enough for the passion they bring to the job and for inculcating in our children the values they require to excel as global citizens.”

Sanwo-Olu said the award was a genuine way to promote merit and encourage healthy competition amongst our teaching staff in Lagos. He appealed to teachers to continue to uphold the ethics and standards of the profession, urging them not to relent in demonstrating uncommon sense of responsibility in discharging their duties.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has sacked the State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Igbiks Tamuno.

This was contained in a statement on Tuesday by Kelvin Ebiri, special assistant to the governor on media.

He revealed that the commissioner has been asked to immediately submit all official documents and properties with him.

Ebiri did not, however, give reasons for why the commissioner was relieved of his job.

“Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has sacked the State Commissioner for Environment, Dr Igbiks Tamuno,” Ebiri said in the statement.

Minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi has expressed that the country has experienced some degree of peace amid the current security challenges.

Magashi stated this while receiving the senate committee on defence on Tuesday.

Army Recruitment: I Mentioned 50 Million Youths In Error, Says Tinubu

 

The national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, has come out to clarify his statement on the recruitment of 50 million youths into the armed forces.

The former governor of Lagos in a statement by his spokesperson, Tunde Rahman, on Tuesday said it was an “accidental verbal mistake” when he said so at a colloquium to celebrate his 69th birthday on Monday.

He disclosed that he meant 50,000 youths recruitment into the security architecture of the country.

Recall that Tinubu on Monday called for massive recruitment in the military to tackle unemployment.

“Asiwaju seeks the expansion of security personnel by 50,000 for the armed forces, not the 50 million that was mentioned in error. It was an accidental verbal mistake of which we all commit from time to time especially when reciting a series of large numerical figures.

“He did not mean 50 million, which is almost a quarter of our total population. The crucial matter is that Asiwaju rightly observed that such strong recruitment would serve the twin-purpose of helping to tackle unemployment while at the same time enhancing the security of every Nigerian.

“Please forgive any confusion due to this innocent error. The most vital thing is that he set forth a wise and timely approach that would help us face two of today’s stiffest challenges.

“It is in the spirit that we hope you view and assess his proposal for it seeks to provide a way for more youths to participate in building a greater, safer, and more prosperous country,” Rahman’s communique reads in part.

AMAZING! 54-Year-Old Man Holds His Breath Underwater For 24 Minutes, Sets New World Record

 

A 54-year-old man from Croatia by the name Budimir Buda Šobat, managed to set a new world record for the longest time breath held underwater, after spending 24 minutes and 33 seconds underwater without coming up for air.

The incredible feat was achieved in a swimming pool, in the town of Sisak, under the supervision of doctors, reporters and supporters, and saw the 54-year-old diver push his body to the limit. After spending a few minutes hyperventilating on pure oxygen, to increase body oxygenation, Šobat spent close to half an hour face down in the pool, without coming up for air.

It sounds like an impossible achievement for a mere mortal, but for the Croatian daredevil it’s the crowning achievement of years of training and conditioning.

A few years ago, Budimir gave up on his passion, bodybuilding, and embraced static diving, soon becoming one of the world’s top 10 static divers. He managed to break the 24-minute barrier three years ago, but this weekend he broke his own Guinness Record (24:11), by spending an insane 24 minutes and 33 seconds underwater.

The current world record for static apnea, a discipline that requires that the respiratory tract be immersed, with the body either in the water or at the surface, sits at 11 minutes and 54 seconds.

It was set in 2014 by Branko Petrovic, in Dubai. However, that is the unaided version of the challenge, whereas Šobat’s is a different variation where divers are allowed to breathe pure oxygen for up to 30 minutes prior to the attempt, to increase body oxygenation.

Although the pure oxygen clearly makes a huge difference, as evidenced by the time difference between the two records, 24 minutes and a half is still an insanely long time to spend underwater without coming up for air.

It requires years of preparation and training the body to pump oxygenated blood at a very slow rate through the body, as we as to retain oxygen for long periods of time.

Even with the help of pure oxygen preparation, static apnea comes with serious risk for the body, especially the brain, which is deprived of normal levels of oxygen.

After about 18 minutes, Šobat starts experiencing involuntary contractions, muscle spasms due to the lack of oxygen, so the 54-year focuses on them and counts them, as a way of retaining consciousness.

Budimir Buda Šobat has always been inspired to push the limits of what is considered physically possible by his 20-year-old daughter, Saša, who has been battling cerebral palsy, autism and epilepsy since childhood. His attempt also had a humanitarian aspect, as it helped raise funds for the children of Sisak, an area severely affected by the powerful earthquake that rocked Croatia in December 2020.

I Begged Niger Republic To Allow Nigeria Construct Railway – Amaechi Reveals

 

Rotimi Amaechi, the Minister of Transportation, has disclosed that he begged the government of Niger Republic to allow Nigeria to construct the $1.95 billion railway from Kano State into Maradi.

Nigeria plans to construct a railway line that would start from Kano to Dutse-Katsina through Jibia and end in Maradi, Niger Republic.

However, Amaechi said he personally traveled to Niger Republic to ensure the government allowed the railway project’s construction.

Speaking on Channels Television, the Minister disclosed that Nigeria would foot the bill for the construction of the project.

The Minister lamented that some critics think that he was serving a Northern interest.

Amaechi said:

“The worst is that they will say I am serving the interest of the North. Let’s assume that is the argument you will make.

“The worst I can do is stop at Jibia which is the border.

“To even get to Maradi, I had to travel to Niger Republic to even beg them.

“They are not bringing their money. It is our money. But I’m begging them to allow me access into Maradi.”

Olusegun Bamgbose, Esq, a chieftain of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, has said that it is now very obvious that Vice president, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo is no longer wanted at the Presidency.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday left Nigeria for the United Kingdom where he will spend two weeks on routine medical checkups.

But the President, as usual, did not officially hand over to his Vice, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and this, Mr. Bamgbose, a senior lawyer described as unconstitutional and diplomatically unacceptable.

The Presidency has already told Nigerians that Buhari will govern the country from wherever he is, insisting that it is unnecessary for him to transmit power to Osinbajo.

“It has gone to show without any iota of doubt that the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo is not giving his rightful regard in the Presidency. He is no longer wanted in the Presidency,” Bamgbose told JOSHUALOADED on Wednesday.

“President Buhari is creating a very bad precedent. One wonders why APC leaders have refused to correct this anomaly. I believe this has to be corrected. We shouldn’t allow Buhari to govern Nigeria as his private estate.

“Nigeria is not Buhari’s private estate, it’s a nation of about 200 million people. This is a country that has a law. It’s ethically wrong for President not to hand over power to Osinbajo when he will be out of the country for two weeks.

“I’m aware that those who are supposed to know the right thing are advising him wrongly. It’s a very pathetic situation. In essence, Nigeria will be without a leader for two weeks.

“This does not make sense. What happens in case of emergency? Will Buhari come back from the UK to deal with it or give orders from the UK? This is certainly not the best practice as far as the running of government is concerned.

“The truth of the matter is that, if this happens again, we shall have no doubt other option but to head to court. The Court won’t waste time to declare it unconstitutional.

“The President is expected to hand over to his Vice president, anything short of this is unacceptable.

“What gives one assurance that President Buhari will handover to a Southerner in 2023, if he can’t hand over power to his Vice for two weeks?

“President Buhari’s action is tantamount to an abuse of his office as the President of the country.

“Governing a country is never a family or private affair. It’s a national affair. One however believes this won’t repeat itself. I wish him safe medical treatment.

“Let him however remember also that Nigeria urgently need economic and security treatment. Our nation is sick, the citizens are hungry,”

He said.

Teachers Troop Out To Protest In Ogun State As Governor Dapo Abiodun Did This Terrible Thing To Them (See What He Did)

About 1,500 youths, who were said to have been shortlisted for employment into the Ogun State teaching service, have accused the State Government of abruptly cancelling the recruitment exercise.

The applicants staged a protest on Tuesday at the Governor’s office, Okemosan, Abeokuta, carrying placards with various inscriptions, as they appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to give them their appointment letters.

According to them, the Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, had once told them that their appointment letters may not be out anytime soon, blaming this on the paucity of funds.

This, they said, gave rise to the recruitment of ‘casual teachers’, who would serve as interns for a period of two years.

JOSHUALOADED reports that the state government began the recruitment of teachers in the last quarter of 2019.

About 29,000 had applied for the 1,500 vacant teaching slots as of November 2019.

Our correspondent reports that qualified applicants were later shortlisted for interviews, but the exercise was put on hold as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

In October 2020, Abiodun assured that 1,655 graduate teachers would be employed, adding that the process was at an advanced stage.

He disclosed that successful applicants would be contacted in due time.

But, the applicants said none of them has heard from the state government as of March 30, 2021.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, an applicant, Yemi Oyeleye, pleaded with Abiodun to give them the teaching job, as they have waited for several months.

The protesters expressed worries that the Education Commissioner has announced the recruitment of casual teachers, cancelling the first recruitment exercise.

Addressing newsmen at the NUJ Secretariat, Iwe-Iroyin, Abeokuta, Adeleye said “what we expected from the government was the completion of the ongoing recruitment exercise, which has taken up to two years now.”

Oyeleye said the government no longer communicate with them, saying “We are the ones forcing ourselves to hear from them now, but they refused to talk to us.”

According to him, several letters have been written to the governor, commissioner and other top government functionaries, but to no avail.

“We want them to release our appointment letters. They have started recruitment, they sent us a congratulatory message that we have been selected,”

Oyeleye pleaded.

Also in his words, another applicant, Ismail Gbeletan, stated that the state government gave no updates on the 1,500 shortlisted applicants, but it rolled out the recruitment of casual teachers.

Gbeletan recalled meeting with Arigbabu, saying he confided in them that the issue of appointment letter is not feasible again because the government is not that financially buoyant to pay permanent teachers.

Reacting, the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr Femi Majekodunmi stated that the state government has not cancelled the recruitment of 1,500 teachers.

He, however, said the process was stalled by the paucity of funds.

He described the latest recruitment exercise as an interim arrangement, a contract for two years.

“Government did not forget them. The situation of things and paucity of funds is the factor. But, the interim recruitment is available for them to partake,” Majekodunmi said.

Founder of Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, in a new message shared on his church’s YouTube channel, has lashed out at his fellow pastors who are telling their church members to go ahead and take a jab of the COVID-19 vaccine.

According to him, pastors should channel the belief they have in the vaccine to the word of God which made them healers.

He said:

“I can’t understand how a minister of the gospel would be waiting for some vaccine to be the solution for the world. Where is your faith? What happened to you?

“We cannot make such recommendations, it is not our calling to make such recommendations. We cannot be used for that. As a minister of the gospel, you should not be used for that.

“How can you become of minister of vaccines? What happened to you? Where is the word of God in your mouth?

“Do you realize that if you would believe in Christ and in the word of God the way you believe in this vaccine, there will be power in your mouth? He (God) made us healers.”

The clergyman lamented how pastors have now forgotten about the God they serve to the point of leading God’s people into a belief in vaccines.

“What is wrong? What has happened to you? When did we start making that kind of recommendation to God’s people?

“For God’s sake, think again. How can they send us to the churches to tell them to go take the vaccine? “Listen, if I say to someone, you shall live and not die, that’s it for him. Isn’t that the Bible that you read?

“Where is your God of Elijah, your God of Moses? Where is your God of Peter, James and John? What is the matter with you?” he asked.

Fani Kayode, via Twitter, shared photos and videos as he received his COVID-19 vaccine, thanking Senator Grace Bent for convincing him to get vaccinated.

”Despite my initially strong reservations I bowed to sound logic and superior reasoning and took my Covid 19 vaccine today.

I also give thanks to my sister the Hon. Patricia Etteh, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, who is the Chairman of the National Hospital and who not only let me eat all HER lunch in her office before the exercise took place but who also gave us a warm reception and guided us through the whole exercise.

Her whole team and staff at the hospital were simply wonderful and very efficient and supportive and consequently the whole exercise was very pleasant.

Chinese Loan: Selfish Lawmakers Have Put Nigeria In Jeopardy – Amaechi Blasts House of Rep

 

Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, says the decision by the House of Representatives to go public on the Sovereignty Immunity Clause in the Chinese loan has delayed the approval for the $5.3bn Ibadan-Kano standard gauge project.

Daily Trust reports that the House of Representatives and Amaechi were at daggers drawn last year over the sovereignty clause in the loan agreement with the China Exim Bank which funded the Abuja-Kaduna and Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge trains.

The lawmakers had queried the inclusion of the clause which gives China access to some national assets in case the Federal Government is unable to fulfill its repayment obligations but the Minister had warned that such discussion could make China have a rethink on the loan.

Speaking in an interview on Channels TV, Amaechi said the “selfishness” of some members of the House of Representatives delayed the approval of the loan by China as they began to ask more questions.

He said,

“That is where we are. The loan for Ibadan-Kano, up till now we have not gotten approval and as at the time that issue happened, we were at the verge of getting approval but they withdrew. So they were asking more questions.

“The other countries we have loan agreements with, they don’t usually ask for sovereignty clause because they trust you. They expect that you pay back. But the moment you brought it to the public, they are saying, ‘Oh you gave China an immunity clause, so you must also give us.’

2023: PDP Suspends Former Niger Governor, Babangida Aliyu (See Why)

 

The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger state has suspended former Governor, Dr Muazu Babangida Aliyu over allegations of anti-party activities leading to cracks in the party.

The former governor was suspended during an emergency Stakeholders’ meeting of Chachanga local Area in Minna on Monday.

The PDP also accused the former governor of working against the Party and supporting the APC in the 2015 election as they added that he does not attend meetings and is working to disintegrate the party.

The meeting was attended by eight ward Chairmen of the party out of the 11 wards, elders and party faithful from Chanchaga LGA.

One of the Media Aides of the former Governor, Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Mr. Bala Bitrus said that the suspension is laughable as the state PDP does not have an executive in place to approve such suspension.

He said that the meeting held was illegal and holds no water adding that Aliyu will address the issue when he receives the communication about his suspension.

Buhari Is Internet Savvy, He Can Work From Anywhere – Garba Shehu

 

The Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to the President, Mallam Garba Shehu, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari can work from anywhere and attend to documents, as he is internet savvy.

Shehu also berated critics over insinuations that President Muhammadu Buhari embarked on an emergency medical trip to the UK, noting that there was no emergency and that it was routine medical checks.

Speaking on ChannelsTV, ‘Politics Today’ on Tuesday, Garba said: “It is a medical trip, and there is absolutely no urgency or emergency.

“The President is not in any sick condition. It’s a routine medical checkup. The President has done this with a set of doctors that he has known over many years even before he came into office in 2015 and has continued to do that without any disruption.

“For last year, 2020, he couldn’t make it because of travel restrictions that were caused by COVID-19. It’s a routine and we are hoping that the President comes back after the check-up.”

Asked if doctors visited the President during the lockdown in 2020, Garba said:

“The President enjoyed good health.

“When his classmates come visiting, you will know that the President is doing well. He chose this moment because it’s like a holiday season as Friday is a national holiday. So he’s taking advantage of the Easter season.”

Asked if President Buhari transmitted power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Garba Shehu said the President was internet savvy.

His words:

“He will continue from wherever he is. The requirement of the law is if the President is going to be absent for 21 days or more, then the transmission is warranted.

“So in this particular instance, it is not warranted.”

On what would be done if there was a need to assent to documents, the presidential spokesman said:

“Before he left, he just finished a meeting with security chiefs.

“He had excellent chat with the Vice President, Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Chief of Staff. So he has taken it all around.

“If it is warranted, these are transmissible by wire. The internet is there and the President is equally internet savvy.

“Therefore, work can continue without any obstruction from wherever he is.”

Asked if the President would take the second jab of COVID-19 vaccine in the UK, Garba Shehu said the President would have returned before then.

Waiter Reveals How Fried Meat Caused Deaths Of 25 People At Yahoo Boy’s Birthday Party (Read Full Details)

 

A viral post on Twitter claimed that no less than 50 people were reported dead after attending a birthday party hosted by a suspected Yahoo boy, a Nigerian gland for an internet fraudster.

According to the report, the incident happened last week and since then there have been numerous reports of young people losing their lives in the area.

“A Yahoo boy did birthday party this last Sunday, and over 50 friends of his who attended the party are dead already. The toll still counting… This happened around Alagbole Akute. May God help us,” @pelumiawotedu tweeted on the 18th of March.

The tweets have been retweeted more than 200 times and several other Twitter users have waded in the discussion, corroborating his claims.

Several stories circulating on social media had it that the deceased persons ate noodles at a birthday party on Saturday, March 20, got home and at midnight, started vomiting blood before they gave up the ghost.

Some persons have also alleged that the food served was pepper soup which might have likely been poisoned.

However, a source told SaharaReporters that her apprentice, who was at the bar on the date of the incident said the so-called internet fraudster drove into the bar on a Thursday and ordered drinks for everyone, which he repeated the following day – Friday.

On Saturday, 20th of March, the alleged fraudster-cum-ritualist drove into the bar and also paid for bottles of beer while he announced it was his birthday.

She said:

The ‘Yahoo boy’ then went to his car where he got a cooler of fried meat and asked everyone to have a bite while sipping their drinks.

“It was at this point that my apprentice noticed his phone was missing. He wanted to capture the scene, make a video or take pictures and post but he couldn’t find his phone so he was more interested in getting the phone than the meat they were sharing. The bar attendants already gave him a bottle of beer paid for by the Yahoo boy and he drank from it before he left to look for his phone. Nothing happened to him, I think whatever caused the death should be the meat because he brought it out from the booth of his car, no one knows where he got it from.”

According to her, 25 people from the incident are now confirmed dead as against the figure given on social media – 50.

She said:

“The story is very true. I think it is a ritual not food poisoning. The Yahoo boy has been coming to the bar; that place is a place where they smoke, drink, anyone can declare that he will foot others’ bills so it was not new when the guy came the first day to say he would pay for all the drinks.

Guys there were happy; the second day, the same thing and the third day, he said it was his birthday that he brought some fried meat in his car so he started distributing to them, telling them to use it to step down (take it along with) the chilled beer he bought for them. They were so happy and started eating.

“From what I heard, at midnight, they would wake up and say, we ate last at City Concept, start vomiting blood and die. Like 25 of them are dead now. 10 at Keredolu, another 10 at Jolasco close to Lambe and another 5 at Alagbole. I can’t tell if the figure is up to 50 because some people who were not accustomed to going to the bar might have been there on that day to take a piece and return to their houses. None of them died at the bar, no one lodged in there, it is not a hotel.

“The Yahoo boy did not die; he simply ran away. He has been declared wanted. His car is even parked at Ajuwon there, some people wanted to burn his car but they were advised against doing such so that the culprit would be traced.

“The police are aware of the incident, they even wanted to go and lock up the hotel but when the owner heard of it, she called them and asked why because she did not produce the beer in her hotel and moreover, the beer was opened for each person at their own request. It was not like it was opened behind them and that was not the first nor second time they had come to the bar to drink.”

Another source told SaharaReporters that a 19-year-old boy who was at the scene of the incident also vomited blood before he died.

She said the boy, who was the son of her mother’s friend, has now been buried.

“He was at the bar; he ate and drank beer too. He vomited blood and died; he has now been buried. His mother and my mother are friends.”

SEE, Twitter Influencer Narrates How A Man Bought Church’ Building And Kicked Out Members

 

A well known Nigerian Twitter influencer, Mr Odanz has narrated how a wealthy man acquired a church building and kicked out all its members over noise pollution.

The main sources of noise pollution in Nigeria are electricity generating plants, vehicular traffic noise engine and pressure horns, construction/industrial noise, machinery noise, noise from religious worship, institutions and household noise.

Taking to Twitter, the narrator with the username @MrOdanz, the said a man in his neighbourhood bought the church and kicked the members out due to noise.

According to him, the church in question is known for disturbing the peace with constant noise, and all efforts to persuade the church members to maintain tranquillity failed.

Frustrated with the whole situation, a wealthy neighbour purchased the building and sent all the members packing.

“There used to be a church located somewhere across my street that torment residents with noise/prayers. The man living on the other side of their fence bought their property last month and evicted them. This was after several efforts to get them to reduce their noise. God is good.”
