It’s a widely known fact that all Nigerian Civil Servants have a statutory retirement age.

The retirement age for Justices of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal, for example, is 70, while the retirement age of any other Judge outside the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal is 65.

The retirement age for teachers and health workers is 65, thanks to President Muhammadu Buhari who recently raised their retirement age to 65 from 60.

The retirement age for workers in all other sectors remain 60 however. Sometimes, civil servants also retire before their retirement age, as they are mandated to retire after 35 years in service or when they clock their retirement age, depending on which one comes first.

Therefore, some Nigerians have mulled that there should also be a retirement age for politicians, which will mandate them to resign from office when they clock the age and also stop them from contesting.
