On this day exactly 3 years ago, Adekunle Gold released his acclaimed sophomore album “About 30.”
“About 30” is Adekunle Gold‘s first album as an independent artist. Released in 2018, almost two years after he dropped his debut, “GOLD” and exited Olamide‘s YBNL record label.
It was around that time he pivoted and founded a live band. Guess he was trying to deepen his alternative music influence, at the time.
“About 30” is Adekunle Gold being the most alternative he could possibly be. While his debut is more pop than alternative, this album was a contrast.
The album, which is considered a modern day classic, was supported by the lead singles, “Ire” and “Surrender.”
Unlike “GOLD” also, “About 30” had an ensemble list of features including the legendary Seun Kuti, Flavour N’abania and London singer, Jacob Banks, who remixed the “Ire” hit song.
From the 16 tracks, there were a couple hits. There’s the R&B “Fame” and the up-tempo “Surrender.” And then there’s the soulful “Damn Delilah.”
Not to forget the biggest of all “Ire” and the gospel song “There Is A God.”
“Call On Me,” Adekunle Gold‘s first voyage into afro-pop was added as a bonus.
It’s indeed a classic, and it’s three years already!
